Hello owners, I know wherever you are, you have probably heard the news about Saturday's strong wind event in Palm Springs. I know my family heard it on the TV in WA State. You may be worrying about your property, so I want to do a summary for you. I did not do so yesterday because I did not have enough information quite yet. Palm Springs was hit harder than any other desert community as the wind came from the West right off the mountain. Yes, indeed we had damage at Sandstone, but no one was hurt or injured and that is what matters most. A large Juniper tree in middle of driveway toppled over landing on top of a carport which was totally demolished doing some damage to two cars parked below it. We had extensive roof damage, six gutters came flying through the air, roof tiles were also flying. Six bougainvilleas came off stairwells, we had palm tree fronds everywhere, pool furniture was mostly in the pools, many broken lights--it is hard to even describe what our complex looked like Saturday late afternoon. The gorgeous bloom blew completely off our bougainvilleas so it will be a little while before we are "Sandstone beautiful" again. On Saturday we were lucky to get a crew out here to saw up and remove the tree from the mangled carport so owners could get their vehicles out. Today the repair work started in earnest. We had roofers here all day who inspected every roof and found most the damage to be fairly minimal--loose, broken, and lifted tiles, etc. All our new roofs have hurricane clips on them which served us very well. We had one flat roof blow off and we got that covered first thing this morning and will begin replacement shortly, Please know that the cooperation of both the owners and renters who reside here was like nothing I could have expected or even wished for. There were countless residents out in the driveway asking what they could do to help. Later Saturday and all day Sunday we had renters and owners working side by side sweeping, piling up fronds, cleaning pool filters, pulling pool furniture out of pools, and doing anything and everything they could do to help. My heart was warmed by this sense of community, that we are all in this together. If you were one of those helping, please accept my heartfelt thanks on behalf of our entire Board. Our pools and spas were thoroughly cleaned today, our handyman fixed broken lights, our gardener has huge piles of fronds gathered to be hauled away; our head landscaper will be here tomorrow to meet with me, the roofers will be back to continue on. Rebuilding of carport will commence soon. Needless to say, repair of our common area will be gong on for awhile, but is already well underway. Our manager opened our insurance claim this morning for windstorm damage. Our policy is $10,000 deductible, but because we have been very prudent with our finances and will have some money carrying over from last year's budget to this year, I have every confidence that we will be fine in that regard. I do need to mention that I have been told by management that under our HOA insurance policy due to an "act of God" clause, those residents who incurred damaged vehicles will need to file their own claims with their respective insurance companies. Landlords should notify their renters of this fact if this applies to you. If you have any questions on this, please contact our manager, Jennifer Huntsman, at 760 325-4257. We hope to see you at our annual meeting this Saturday, January 28, at 10 a.m. (check-in at 9:30) at Mizell Senior Center, corner of Ramon and Sunrise. We have made quorum. A potluck lunch will follow at our complex at 1 p.m. Best regards, Kay Chabot, President Sandstone Villas Board of Directors
